Arthur Gard STEVEN
Arthur G. Steven was born in London ON, in 1920. After a stint in the Canadian Airforce during WWII he attended the Ontario College of Art, graduating in 1947.
He was a well-known graphic designer in the publishing industry (Ryerson Press 1947-1970) as well as a landscape, figurative and abstract painter in acrylics, oils and watercolours. He was a member of Ontario Society of Artists, The Society of Canadian Artists and The Arts & Letters Club of Toronto.
He exhibited extensively in Ontario and across Canada. Steven was represented by galleries in Toronto ON, Calgary AB, London ON, and St. John’s NL.
His work is held in private and public collections in Britain, Canada, and the United States, including: The Royal Canadian Navy, IBM Canada, Manufacturers Life, The Peel Board of Education and The Union Bank of Switzerland.
This landscape is an image of the street scene in front of The Commercial Hotel, built by Matthew Laidlaw in 1852, and one of the first commercial hotels in in Old Meadowvale Village. Standing today at 1051 Old Derry Road, Meadowvale, Mississauga ON, the hotel is now a private residence.
