JENNIFER SMALL

Bachelor of Fine Art, Concordia University, Montréal.

Jennifer Small’s work falls under the large umbrella of assemblage. Collected at various flea markets around La Belle Province, the objects rescued by Small are chosen for their beauty, the excellent craft they exhibit, and often the patina of time that embellishes them.

Her conceptual repurposing of discarded devotional objects is more of a reflection than an attack on the Catholic Church. Small often utilizes humour to address the complex relationship that subsists between this Catholic heritage – and its often loaded cultural and sociological history.

Small’s fresh perspective confers a new meaning and reading to these former devotional objects, by reimagining them for a contemporary audience.

Jennifer Small also works in the film industry, bringing a three-dimensional perspective along with an ability to frame an object for maximum viewer impact. She has exhibited extensively at galleries in Canada and her work can be found in important private collections.
