ALLEN HIRSH

Allen Hirsh is a materials-based creator of three-dimensional constructs. His process involves sketching the overall construction and creating a paper pattern. Then, using a combination of new and found wood, sometimes reworking existing elements, Allen utilizes acrylic paint, oil crayons and pencil to add colour and images. Gouging the wood and using multiple sculptural techniques adds texture and dimension. The process continues, adding and subtracting elements until the artist is satisfied.

“I think of myself as a 'constructivist' - someone who puts things together. Although the mediums used over the years has changed, many of my themes are continual: creating density –a rich integrated whole formed from distinct building blocks; having a sense of optimism and playfulness; being prolific and productive through passion; creating imperfection – sometimes deliberate, sometimes not; developing visual connections; presenting abstraction that raises questions without revealing the complete story; and provocation – hopefully in a good way.”

Allen Hirsh has exhibited in numerous galleries in Toronto and Prince Edward County – both locations he considers home.
